With facilities equipped for making small-batch, premium-quality wine, the winery site is about a 10-minute drive north from the Plunkett family-owned vineyards. The winery itself is perched on Upton Hill in the cool climate region of the Strathbogies Ranges in Central Victoria. Encompassing panoramic views of Mt Wombat to the North and Mt Buller to the East, the winery is accessible by a winding gravel road which leads off the Hume Hwy — you’ll find us through the gates for “Elgo Estate” ( 1982 Upton Rd Upton Hill Vic. 3664 Australia )
We’re a bit off the beaten track to operate a full-time cellar door, but if you’re ever up our way and would like a tour of a working winery, please give us a call! (Sam 0408 587 702 or Bronwyn 0403 059 423)
At 450m to 500m in elevation, our vineyards experience a cooler growing season with a combination of dry sunny days & cool night time temperatures. The soil profile is generally described as a sandy loam with a granitic base with some granitic floaters & sheet rock. Sam’s father – Alan Plunkett – moved onto the property in 1966 to farm sheep, and he planted the first grapes in the year Sam was born (1968). While the Merino sheep are farmed for their wool, they are also integral to vineyard management — being left to graze in the vineyards in winter, they are an effective form of weed control and apply a very natural form of fertiliser!
Today, there is approximately 170 acres of vineyard in production with varieties including Riesling, Savagnin, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Tempranillo, Lagrein, Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz.
