The fruit for this wine was grown on the Plunkett family Whitegate Vineyard in the elevated and cool Strathbogie Ranges
of Central Victoria.

Picked on April 3rd, ferment was allowed to start spontaneously in small bins at the vineyard. At this stage around 20% of the stalks were retained in the ferment, which contributes to the spicy character, and adds a layer of texture. Several days later we brought the fermenting fruit to the winery and crushed it into a combination of 3 tonne open fermenters and a larger static fermenter. At this stage we added a pure yeast culture (BP725 – a French isolate).

After ferment the wine was matured in small oak barrels for around 6 months. I’m normally a fan of new oak, but in this case we used seasoned barrels to limit the amount of oak which might otherwise overwhelm the lovely but delicate Pinot Noir flavours. We love this wine, and are really excited to get a crackingly good Pinot Noir to bottle. But in a classic ‘Murphy’s Law’ situation, we lost about half when a forklift clipped a stack of pallets sending about 90 cases of wine down the drain!
